How to Care for Human Hair Wigs (Make Yours Last Longer)
Share
A quality human hair wig is an investment — and like any investment, how you care for it determines how long it pays off. With the right routine, a human hair wig can last 1–3 years or more. Here's everything you need to know.
Why Human Hair Wigs Need Special Care
Unlike synthetic wigs, human hair wigs can be heat-styled, colored, and treated much like your own hair. But that also means they need moisture, gentle handling, and regular maintenance to stay soft, shiny, and tangle-free. Neglect leads to dryness, matting, and shedding — all avoidable with a simple routine.
Our Body Wave Glueless Wig and Water Wave Glueless Wig are both 100% human hair — here's how to keep them looking their best.
How Often Should You Wash Your Wig?
Wash your wig every 7–10 wears, or sooner if you've used heavy products, sweat, or notice buildup. Over-washing strips moisture; under-washing leads to product buildup and odor.
How to Wash a Human Hair Wig
What you'll need: sulfate-free shampoo, a moisturizing conditioner or deep conditioner, a wide-tooth comb, a wig stand, and a microfiber towel.
- Detangle first — gently comb through the wig from ends to roots before getting it wet.
- Rinse with cool water — run cool water through the wig in a downward direction to avoid tangling.
- Shampoo gently — apply a small amount of sulfate-free shampoo and work it through the hair in a downward stroking motion. Never scrub in circles.
- Rinse thoroughly — make sure no shampoo residue remains.
- Condition — apply conditioner from mid-shaft to ends (avoid the roots/knots). Leave on for 5–10 minutes, then rinse.
- Deep condition monthly — use a deep conditioning mask and sit under a hooded dryer or wrap in a warm towel for 20–30 minutes for extra moisture.
Drying Your Wig
- Always air dry on a wig stand — this preserves the shape and prevents stretching.
- Pat (don't rub) with a microfiber towel to remove excess water.
- Never sleep on a wet wig — this causes matting and breakage.
- If you need to speed up drying, use a blow dryer on the lowest heat setting with a diffuser.
Heat Styling Tips
Human hair wigs can handle heat — but moderation is key.
- Keep flat irons and curling wands below 380°F (193°C).
- Always use a heat protectant spray before applying any heat.
- Limit heat styling to 2–3 times per week max.
- For our Body Wave Glueless Wig, you can refresh the wave pattern with a flexi-rod set or braid-out instead of heat.
Detangling Without Damage
- Always detangle when the hair is damp, not dry.
- Start from the ends and work upward to the roots.
- Use a wide-tooth comb or your fingers — never a fine-tooth comb on curly or wavy textures.
- Apply a leave-in conditioner or detangling spray before combing.
How to Store Your Wig
- Wig stand: best for daily use — keeps the shape and allows airflow.
- Silk or satin bag: best for travel or long-term storage — reduces friction and frizz.
- Keep wigs away from direct sunlight and humidity, which can cause color fading and frizz.
- Never store a wig in a plastic bag — it traps moisture and causes mildew.
Signs It's Time for a New Wig
Even with great care, wigs don't last forever. Look out for:
- Excessive shedding that doesn't improve with conditioning
- Irreversible tangling or matting at the roots
- Dryness that no conditioner can fix
- Lace that's torn or too damaged to lay flat
